How to Prepare for In-Home Newborn Photos
Preparing your baby for a posed in-home newborn photoshoot is important to ensure that the session runs smoothly and that your baby is comfortable throughout the process. Here are some tips to help you prepare your baby for an in-home newborn session:
1. Schedule the photo shoot at the right time: Schedule the session during a time when your baby is likely to be most cooperative and calm. This is usually within the first two weeks of birth when the baby is still in a sleepy state. It is also best to schedule your session early in the day.
2. Keep the baby well-fed: Make sure your baby is well-fed and has a clean diaper before the session. This can help keep the baby calm and comfortable throughout the session. You can change and feed baby as the photographer is setting up for the session. Set up can take up to 30 minutes so it is the perfect time to do it!
3. Dress the baby in comfortable clothing: Dress your baby in comfortable clothing that is easy to change. A zippered sleeper is perfect, you should also loosen baby's diaper and make sure socks aren't tight. Tight diapers and socks can leave lines on baby's skin.
4. Keep the room warm: Make sure the room where the session will take place is warm and comfortable for the baby. This will help the baby stay relaxed and comfortable throughout the session.
5. For Posed Newborn sessions, the room should be dark. The photographer will bring a light source and doesn't need ambient light in the room. (This of course does not apply to lifestyle sessions, which use the natural light in your home!)
6. Be patient and flexible: Newborn sessions can take time, and it's important to be patient and flexible during the process. You should plan on a full posed newborn photoshoot taking around 3 hours. Your photographer will work with you to create a comfortable and stress-free environment for both you and your baby. You can rest or get some things done around the house if you'd like, your baby is in good hands!
7. It is OK if your baby doesn’t go to sleep right away, don’t stress out about it! Your photographer has been in this situation many times and your baby will eventually fall asleep! The photographer will get some cute awake shots if this happens so there is nothing to worry about.
By following these tips, you can help prepare your baby for an in-home newborn session and ensure that the session goes smoothly. The result will be beautiful photos that you'll treasure for years to come.
